Maritime Training and Education

The Maritime Industry is a fast paced and dynamic sector to pursue and develop a career in.

There are two interlinked career options that an individual can follow; the mercantile route, which leads to a life at sea or the shore based route, where a professional is involved in providing skills and expertise on the commercial and operational aspects of this global industry.

The Mercantile Route

The National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) is the country's designated centre for the education and training of personnel for the Merchant Marine.

The college offers a comprehensive range of training and education courses to get any individual off to the right start with their career at sea.

The Shore Based Route

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers' Ireland is the main provider of education and training for individuals employed in land based roles within the Irish maritime sector.

The Institute organises lecturers and exams internationally for the membership, thus providing the shipping industry with highly qualified professionals. The Institute is the only internationally recognised professional body in the commercial maritime arena.

Third level general supply chain management education courses

There are a number of general supply chain management courses available to study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in Ireland.

By opting to study supply chain management you will develop a broad understanding of the transport industry as a whole and also gain insight on the organisational and management theories involved in the manufacturing and commodities sectors. As Ireland is an island nation, elements of the maritime logistics supply network will be included in the overall supply chain management course.

Seafarer Certificates of Competency are issued by the Mercantile Marine Office

Seafaring is a strictly regulated profession. Certificates of Competency are issued by the Mercantile Marine Office of the Department of Transport for service on merchant ships and fishing vessels.
