National Maritime Legislation

As part of the Department of Transport, the Maritime Safety Directorate, (comprised of the Marine Survey Office (MSO) and the Maritime Safety Policy Division), is responsible for the implementation of all national and international legislation in relation to safety of shipping and the prevention of pollution of the marine environment from ship-based sources in Irish Ports and territorial waters.

The Department of Transport issues Marine Notices from time to time. Marine Notices are information notices that publicise important safety, regulatory and other information relating to maritime affairs in Ireland. They are circulated widely to State Agencies, international shipping companies, ports , the fishing industry and water-based recreational groups.

Maritime Acts

A number of acts have been passed through the Irish parliament in order to provide modern legislative guidance and assist in the future growth and development of national ports and shipping policy:
